THE Burg –
First of all, let me say that I rated the Alexa and Smart Features in the middle just because I don’t use them — at least not yet. So don’t judge the product based on that!I am, however, disappointed in the way Bluetooth integration of audio is handled. I wear hearing aids and use Bluetooth to connect my hearing aids to the TV for audio. My hearing aids are not new enough to be on the list of devices that can be connected to the TV as hearing aids so I use regular Bluetooth. I suspect that using the hearing aid integration would produce similar results. One complaint is that there is a lag between the audio reaching me and the picture. This is not a huge problem, but annoying. I would like to see a solution to this. The big complaint though is that when I connect to the TV with my hearing aids, the TV external speakers are turned off. This is fine when I’m watching alone, but when I want to watch with someone else, I have to turn my hearing aid connection off. When I do this, either I can’t hear, or I turn the TV up so much that it is uncomfortable for whoever is watching with me. As I understand it, there are solutions for this, but they require extra equipment. Seems like all of my concerns could be handled in software and it irks me to think I might have to spend MORE after making a major investment in this TV.One final concern with the TV. When I am using the hearing aids, I seem to have little control over volume. If I turn volume to zero, then it is muted. If I turn volume to one, it is too loud.A final complaint is with customer service, not with the product. I was completely unable to contact Amazon with these issues. I poked around the customer service pages for a long time and found no help. I finally went off sight and got an e-mail address that was SUPOSED to get me to a human, but it came back with an “unmonitored e-mail address” notification. I know companies are trying to save money and that some of that might be passed on to us but when you need customer service, you need customer service! My hope is that they monitor these reviews and might take up these issues. All that said, the TV is a good product and I understand that many Smart TVs have the same issues. Despite my dissatisfaction, I WOULD recommend the product and MIGHT buy it again.

I recently purchased an Xbox Series S which outputs in 4k, so I decided to upgrade from my 4 year old standard HD set (which I now use for TV viewing in the bedroom).I decided on the Amazon Fire 43″ 4k, and I’m overall VERY pleased with it. The Xbox looks absolutely AMAZING on it, but things get a little different with normal video streaming or TV viewing. If you look through the reviews here, you’ll see a few that mention blurry video quality or something called “Action Smoothing”. Make SURE you turn this feature OFF, or your shows and movies will seem like your watching it in person and not at all like you’re used to seeing it. To turn it off, long-press the settings button (the asterisk looking button) then go down to ‘picture’, then ‘clarity’, then down to ‘Action Smoothing’. Set the slide bar all the way to zero. The picture will become like you’re used to seeing things. No, it doesn’t affect 4k quality.Thing IS, you’ll have to do this almost every time you change the picture or color settings. What I learned is THIS – for each of the devices plugged into my HDMI ports, I have a different picture setting. They seem to save the clarity setting for each mode, so I don’t have to keep adjusting them. That being said, this 4k TV is SO much more vibrant than my old HD TV. The picture is beautiful even though MOST signals STILL aren’t streamed in 4k in most cases.I don’t use the Alexa features much, but I might use them more later since I DO have Alexa on my phone and echo dot speakers.I’m looking into finding out if I can use a Fire Tablet as a superior remote to the one provided.Overall? A really GOOD television for under $250.
My Public Name –
The 55″ smart TV for a little over $300 (was on sale at the time) was delivered almost immediately. Easy to assemble the “feet” and was already configured to connect to my network. It integrated my Recast almost instantly, without being prompted and was also easy to connect to an Echo Studio for “surround sound”. Well, not quite with just one of them, even with ATMOS content, but it beats the built-in speakers.Speaking of the Echo Studio, you lose the on-screen volume indicator and apparently can’t hold the volume buttons down, as you can when using the TV speakers. The former is irritating and the latter is just plain silly for such an expensive add-on.And speaking of the remote. The redesigned button layout is really stupid. The old layout was much easier to find the right buttons with your thumb. The new one is all uniform rows and columns of same-sized buttons. Maybe they thought that looked “cleaner”, but the ergonomics have taken a huge step backwards. Also wish they’d lose the dedicated buttons for Disney+, Hulu, etc. It’s advertising and only convenient for those who subscribe to the sponsors’ services.Still, couldn’t be happier at this price point. Picture looks great to me, though surely pales when compared to sets that cost twice as much. And, as expected, built-in speakers are not great, but soundbar support is rumored to be very good with this model (unlike some previous Amazon-branded TVs that I’ve owned).Hopefully it will last. I still use the other two I bought three years ago. And hopefully they’ll fix the stupid Alexa bug that prevents turning it on and off by name. (!) Yes, “Turn on Den TV” responds with “Den TV doesn’t support that”. (!!) Oddly, enough this “trick” works fine with the older models, though one of them will go into a “coma” once it is off more than a few minutes, foiling all attempts at automation until the remote is used to turn it back on (defeating the whole purpose). That happened about a year in and they never fixed it, no matter how much feedback I sent. The best advice they could offer was to factory reset the thing. :(Workaround for this new one is “Turn on Fire TV”, which is ridiculous and will only work with the linked smart speaker. Support was no real help, but supposedly they escalated the problem. I’ve heard that before, so won’t hold my breath. But at least it stays responsive in standby mode. For now anyway. 🙂
